Concord Suite’s demolition given green light
Tameside Council can now move forward with its plans to raze the top three floors of the 1960s Droylsden building – a project the local authority hopes will pave the way for the town centre’s regeneration.
Tameside granted permission to its own demolition application during this week’s planning committee meeting.
The Concord Suite has had a stories past, serving as a dancehall and function room for decades and hosting town hall offices. The space has been vacant since 2015.
The plans, put forward on the council’s behalf by Hive Land and Planning, would see 24,750 sq ft of space demolished. The ground floor would be retained, as third-party interests have prevented it from being part of the demolition programme.
When the local authority announced its plans to raze the suite, executive member for growth, housing, and homeless Andrew McLaren described the project as demonstrating a commitment to Droylsden’s regeneration.
“We want to see this site once again playing an important role at the heart of Droylsden, creating a better, greener, and more vibrant town centre for everyone and helping attract further investment into the town centre,” he said.
The project team for the demolition application includes Hive Land & Planning, Graham + Sibbald, Freeley, KODA, RSK, AMROSE, ECS Consultants, CT Surveys, and Dunelm Ecology
