And with the energy sector itself due to become a major economic drive in the North, how do we align industry wants with placemaking needs?
Place North’s Energy & Power conference will look into both aspects of the energy question. The event will be held at Bridgewater Hall in Manchester on 17 September, starting from 8am with a networking breakfast and concluding with a lunch at noon.

Sarah Bateman is the chief executive of Unify Energy. Bateman led Bruntwood Group’s energy proposition, which eventually became Unify Energy – the first regulated energy supply business to offer an end-to-end energy solution rom supply and sub-meter management through to billing for building owners and operators. Bateman was previously part of global tech giant Cisco, leading the incubation and commercialisation of start-up ideas across Europe.
Tom Bell is a strategy manager at UK National Nuclear Laboratory. Bell is responsible for defining and implementing the lab’s long-term strategy. He also chairs the Northern Nuclear Alliance’s working group on technology and innovation, and is passionate about unlocking the potential of the nuclear sector to benefit society.
Melissa Crellin is the interim head of policy, partnerships, and public affairs at Cheshire and Warrington Combined Authority. Crellin’s work has focused on sustainable economic development, inclusive growth and the transition to cleaner energy, drawing on extensive experience across local and regional organisations, including local government, regional partnerships, higher education and the voluntary and community sector. She has led the development of evidence-based strategies and major programmes across the region, working closely with elected members, senior leaders and organisations including councils, Combined Authorities, regional partners, national government, businesses, education providers and the voluntary and community sector. Her work focuses on shaping policy and building strong partnerships to help deliver improvements for people and places, aligned with national and regional priorities.
Amy Longmore-Gaskell is an associate director at Turley. Longmore-Gaskell is an associate director in the planning team at Turley with experience in large scale and complex planning applications for a range of projects from carbon capture facilities, energy recovery facilities, and solar schemes. She has formulated planning strategies and secured planning permissions for a number of high-profile major developments within the industrial, decarbonisation and energy sectors.
Rachel O’Donnell is the director for resilience, Europe at Mace Consult. In her role at Mace, O’Donnell leads the team that project manages and delivers large, complex developments in the energy, nuclear, and water sectors. O’Donnell is an advocate for the nuclear industry, with more than 20 years of experience in the sector. She chairs the Northern Nuclear Alliance.
Michael Pemberton is the chief executive of BEC. BEC is Cumbria’s leading social impact property developer, known for developments such as LEVELS, The Bus Station and Westlakes Science Park. BEC are currently leading on Pioneer Park alongside Cumberland Council, DESNZ and the NDA. Pioneer Park is a transformative clean-energy development next to the Sellafield site in West Cumbria, which will deliver 12bn. of private investment and will facilitate SMRs and AI Data Centres, unlocking major opportunities for the region.
Peter Ridge is the director of power systems at Cundall. Ridge is Cundall’s director of power systems and an energy sector lead. A chartered engineer, he is passionate about technical excellence and collaboration in the sector and uses these tenets to apply emerging technologies to support the transition to resilient, net zero energy systems.
Jason Rockett is the managing director of Potter Space. With a portfolio of more than 1.7m of commercial space and 250 acres ideal for strategic development, Potter Space is a champion of the sub-100,000 sq ft industrial market. As an owner, operator, and developer of warehouses and industrial space, Rockett is in tune with the power issue when it comes to enabling development and meeting occupier demands.
Peter Rowe is a senior development manager at Cubico Sustainable Developments. Rowe leads Scout Moor II, an onshore wind farm in Lancashire and Greater Manchester. As the first scheme in England to advance since the lifting of the de facto ban, it marks a major milestone for the sector. As an experienced town planner, Rowe has overseen complex projects from site origination through to planning, environmental assessment, and stakeholder engagement. He works closely with landowners, councils, and communities to deliver robust, locally supported schemes, and is passionate about maximising supply chain opportunities, jobs, and long-term community benefits from the transition to clean energy.
