Tier Consult beefs up leadership structure

The Chester-headquartered engineering firm has formalised a new board of five directors, each promoted from within the business.

Tier said this marks a significant step in the company’s development after more than two decades of owner-led growth under the stewardship of Philip Barlow.

Founder and chief executive Barlow said: “This transformation isn’t about me stepping back, it’s about building a structure this business requires to meet the challenges of the construction industry.

“We’ve grown steadily and independently for over 20 years, and future-proofing that growth means putting the right people in the right roles now. Every one of these five directors has grown with the business, and this board reflects exactly the future we’re building towards.”

Tier Consult operates from offices in Chester, Manchester, London and Bristol, providing structural, civil, and geo-environmental engineering expertise, working closely alongside sister company Tier Environmental.

The new board comprises:

  • Nicola Wilcock, director – housing & public sector projects
  • Louis Jenkinson, director – industrial & logistics
  • Worran Lloyd, director – real estate engineering and infrastructure
  • Nathan Somerset, director – structural surveying & public sector services
  • Jayan Modasia, director – high rise & BTR

Each director has grown within Tier Consult itself, with several progressing from graduate- or technician-level roles.

Previously, the set-up included two directors working alongside Barlow: Rob Harmston, who led the Manchester arm of the business, and Jim Fraser, who led London. Both are moving into consultancy roles with Tier as the new board comes in and the company evolves.

Alongside formalising the structure and personnel of its senior leadership team, Tier Consult is bringing its operations together under a single Tier Consult Ltd structure from the end of August.

This will replace several previous entities, offering a single clear point of contact for clients across the firm’s offices.

Tier has recently secured work on the flagship £180m Knauf Insulation project at the former Tata Steel site in Flintshire, a 200,000 sq ft development approved in July that represents one of the largest schemes in the firm’s portfolio to date.
