Wigan approves school overhaul
Main contractor BAM Construction is set to begin work on the transformation of Byrchall High School off Warrington Road in May, replacing the existing school building with an updated 85,000 sq ft facility.
The project has been approved by Wigan Council and is due to be completed in June 2024.
Under plans drawn up by BAM Design, the original 1960 building will be demolished and replaced with a two- to three-storey facility. The new school will be delivered in phases so that teaching can continue throughout construction.
The new building will provide pupils with a four-court, multi-use sports hall as well as a dance studio, education workshops, and a dining room facility for events and theatre.
Externally, there will be an outdoor sports pitch and performance area, as well as a tuck shop and pizza oven.

Plans propose 50 additional cycle spaces to join the existing 10 cycle and 137 car parking spaces.
Dally Handerson Landscape is the landscape architect for the scheme, while Lambert Smith Hampton is the planning consultant. Via Solutions is advising on transport.
Byrchall High School is one of the four schools in Wigan that received a portion of the Department for Education’s £1bn School Rebuilding Programme.
Bam is also currently working on Fred Longworth High School in Tyldesley on a £24m contract.
Wigan Council’s reference number for the application is A/22/94477/MAJPSI.
