Stockport Grammar moves to meet ‘urgent’ sports need
The school is planning to build a 13,000 sq ft complex to replace some of its existing sports facilities, which are out of date and in poor condition.
Stockport Grammar has lodged an application with the local council to knock down the 6,000 sq ft sports centre and pavilion, which were built in the early 1960s.
The current complex, located at the heart of the campus, is plagued by asbestos, cracked windows, and a leaky roof, according to a design and access statement prepared by 10 Architects.
Proposals for a new two-storey facility aim to act as “a central anchor [on site]…and provide urgent sports provision to the school”, the architect said.
Four changing rooms, a gym, dance studio, an external terrace are proposed within the proposed facility, which will be constructed on the existing building’s footprint.
The scheme forms part of the school’s efforts to address buildings at or reaching the end of their lives and improve sports provision.

Earlier this year, Stockport Grammar announced plans to sell a clutch of disused sports pitches under its ownership on Dialstone Lane.
Story Homes is planning to build 112 homes there, including 56 earmarked as affordable.
