Wetherspoons eyes former Liverpool TGI Fridays
The defunct restaurant chain’s New Mersey Shopping Park unit could be converted into a pub.
Pub chain JD Wetherspoon has submitted an application to transform the 7,000 sq ft former TGI Fridays at the shopping and leisure complex off Liverpool’s Speke Road.
The plan is for the pub, which would be sandwiched between a Zizzi and a Wagamama, to open at 8am everyday. It would be open until midnight Sunday to Thursday and until 1am on Friday and Saturday, according to planning documents submitted to Liverpool City Council.
The pub would add to Wetherspoons’ 800+ portfolio of venues and fill a void at Speke Unit Trust’s 436,000 sq ft shopping park. The unit became vacant in 2024 when TGI Fridays entered administration.

A popular chain and will be a great draw for breakfast food, located between Zizzi and Wagamama will fit well too, while both of them are open till 11pm at weekends.

I think Spoons have got enough pubs in Liverpool. They need to open more in Manchester. They have closed the cotton bail in Hyde. The Milson Rhodes in Didsbury. The Kings Hall in Cheadle and the Erwin Chadwick in Levenshulme. None have been replaced

As a food offering Wetherspoons is great, I am however a little sceptical about the wisdom of having a primarily alcohol based establishment at a location that you have to drive to get to

Zizzis is no longer there. It’s a Popeye’s now. There’s also pizza express, and nandos.

This is proof that business related planning applications do get submitted to Liverpool City Council, I looked back on PNW to June 1st and there’s almost nothing being submitted, except for household, hmo’s, and advertising hubs the staff must have nothing to do.
