Aldi eyes Hazel Grove Carpetright

The supermarket chain wants to knock down the former furniture store on Macclesfield Road and build its second store in the Stockport village.

Aldi is seeking approval to bulldoze the 41,000 sq ft former Carpetright store, which closed down in 2024 when the brand was acquired out of administration by Tapi.

Demolition of the existing structures would leave a two-acre site for redevelopment into a store. Aldi supermarket’s typically range from 12,000 sq ft to 20,000 sq ft.

Subject to planning approval, the Macclesfield Road store would be constructed a mile from the next nearest Aldi, located off Commercial Road.

Aldi will be hoping for a smoother ride through planning in Stockport than rival Lidl got recently. Lidl was initially refused permission for a store on the former Cheadle Heath Works site before the Planning Inspectorate overturned the decision.

Avison Young and the Harris Partnership are advising Aldi on its plans. To learn more, search for reference number DC/099150 on Stockport Council’s planning portal.

Just what we need: more out of centre shops for people to drive to.
If this site is surplus to the previous out of centre uses need then it should be housing. Its no wonder we’re having to build all over the greenbelt.

It’s in the “Village Centre”, next to the bus station park and ride scheme. Not out of town. Couldn’t get much more sustainable.

I’ve remember it was Carpet world in 1990s and near the rail line was use cargo rail but not now…I never forget about it.

Another supermarket to add further vehicular congestion to that already very busy road.
Non the less even with complaints and objections it is the norm at the juncture of planning, approval and permissions stage the green light is given as a foregone conclusion to the project. On a more positive note is will give employment opportunities in the immediate area and further afield – which is a good.

You have park and ride so people wouldnt have to drive in and i think its a great idea or maybe the ambulace station could knock it down and build the new station there or it could be flats houses who know it dosnt mean aldi will get it

Would prefer a Lidl for competition

I remember when Kenn Dodd opened the Carpet right store! I don’t think he’ll be available to do Aldi.

Build a new gymnastics club and swimming pool it would be perfect for everyone 👍🏻

There’s a gym and swimming pool up the road, G J Kitchener. Who’s buying the land and paying for the leisure facilities in your plan?

Please don’t close the Hazel Grove store it this goes ahead It is so convenient for a lot of people and on the 192 bus route

Would prefer Lidl or Marks Spencer food there.

Doesn’t make any sense building another Aldi so close to the existing stores in Hazel Grove centre and Poynton 2 miles down the same road. If a supermarket is planned then Lidl would be a more sensible and financially sound choice for this site!
These big companies look at housing planning in the area. Need I say more!!!

It would be lovely to see Marks and Spencer food back in Hazel Grove, rather than Aldi.

I’m sure Aldi would be delighted to hear from the retail experts in the comments, especially those who can tell them that they’ve got other stores elsewhere in the area. It might come as a huge surprise to them. Also, no-one has any say about who comes forward for a scheme like this – the council can’t refuse Aldi permission in preference to Lidl or M&S or any other supermarket.

Its a good idea, means the carpetright site gets better use.
I would not be suprised if Aldi have got plans to sell off the comercial road site for housing/ apartments.
Could be very lucrative, and beneficial for many.

Not another Aldi! Already in Hazel Grove, Offerton, Stockport and Poynton. Why not Lidl and /or M&S food. Or housing instead of on Greenbelt.

Lidl please.

As a local – this is a breath of fresh air. Would absolutely love an Aldi in walking distance! Some negative people on here would prefer a derelict empty building. We have a small baby and it’s not so easy to get to the Asda or Aldi on the A6. This is a genuinely what we hoped would replace carpetright when they closed down. Hopefuly it will have a bakery too!

I think it would be great as Lidl, we have two other Aldi close by. I don’t think thry will have another M&S store now they’ve opened the large one at Portwood which is a nightmare to go to.
The traffic is already a nightmare at that corner of Hazel Grove thry will have to sort out the lights too.

No thanks there are already two near by. An M&S food, or Booths supermarket would be nice.

Love this – a vote from me!

We have an Aldi in Hazel Grove and one not far away in Poynton and one in Romiley. I think a Lidl would make a nice change to give choice.

That site was originally Carpet World’s flagship store, I worked there for 20+ years… Very fond memories
