Salford Central’s £10m upgrade to start in February
A replacement ticket office, accessible toilets, and improved passenger information displays are to be installed, while new signage will bring the station in line with the Bee Network brand.
Cumbrian-based Story Contracting will deliver on Network Rail and Transport for Greater Manchester’s £10m investment, which will modernise the station’s accessibility and customer services.
To enable the work which will start on 6 January, Salford Central will shut to passengers from 10 February until 21 April next year, with additional closures scheduled on 27 April and 4 May.
Wider and less disruptive works will be undertaken throughout next year, with completion expected in October.
Andy Burnham, Mayor of Greater Manchester, said: “These improvements are a big step forward on our journey to bringing commuter rail lines into the Bee Network by 2028, helping connect more people to new opportunities and driving economic growth across the city region.”
Paul Dennett, Salford City Mayor, said the upgrades would provide long-term benefits for residents and commuters.
He said: “I now look forward to seeing the positive impact these projects will have on improving everyone’s experiences travelling into the city.”
Seed Architects is behind the designs for the station.
Story Contracting is active throughout the North West. It was recently chosen by United Utilities as an approved contractor for infrastructure improvements.
The contractor is also in line to contribute to the £27m Carlisle Gateway project, which will upgrade Carlisle’s station.
Returning to Greater Manchester, the Salford Crescent station is also being upgraded through the addition of a third platform, requiring weekend closures between March and September next year.
Work on Salford Crescent is not expected to be completed until 2026.
This station is always being done up, maybe spend the money on the tracks first

Such an under utilised station given how close it is to Spinningfields and New Bailey.

It needs the other two platforms opening as well.

How about a new platform
By Big Dub
Didn’t they just do this a couple of years ago? How about adding extra platforms

How about a tap bar selling cheap spirits at inflated prices and undrinkable wine? Most central stations have one now

More “improvements” and yet still no mention of brining the redundant platform(s) back into use!

Yet still nothing on the Castlefield bottleneck – we were told the project was ‘shovel ready’. I assume there were pigs flying over at the time.

This is essentially phase 1, they are moving the ticket office from the 1st floor to the ground floor to make circulation room on the 1st floor for restoring access to the old platforms. They are also replacing the ceilings above the 1st floor surrounding the steps down from the platforms as they have always leaked and putting in new platform shelters.

Salford Central should be served by local stopping trains between Victoria and Piccadilly to serve the business admin. districts of Salford and Manchester — a no-brainer.

A competent country would have 5 or 6 platforms on this site. This station really could alleviate pressure on Victoria if used properly.
