Revamped Maryport marina completed
Capita and Cumbrian building contractor Stobbarts have completed the £1.7m redevelopment of Maryport Marina for West Lakes Renaissance, the area's urban regeneration company.
A celebratory event this week marked the culmination of five years' work to create new and improve existing facilities at the marina, which is a key focal point of the town. The marina now features:
- Upgraded and refurbished boat repair facilities
- New offices for marina owner Maryport Developments with room for other occupiers
- Rearranged pontoons with additional 30 berths, including access for larger boats
- New boat lifting equipment
- New car parking facilities.
Together with the marina complex, several other projects have been completed in the town including Ellenfoot Bridge, The Wave, a performance and exhibition space and the refurbishment of the West Coast go-karting premises. More projects are also in the pipeline including new managed workspace on the site of the recently demolished BIP button factory and at the soon to be demolished Story Decorators and Armstrongs Concrete Products premises, and a transport interchange at Maryport train station.
Noel Butters, regeneration manager at West Lakes Renaissance, said: "The redevelopment of Maryport Marina is an important part of the West Lakes Renaissance harbour investment programme, and indeed our wide-ranging work to transform the town into a high quality destination for business and tourism. The new and improved facilities will help raise the profile of the marina and act as a catalyst for more people to come and use this asset for both business and leisure.
"Maryport is something of a boom town at the moment with an array of regeneration work taking place – and this is just the start of several years of sustained activity. The recent opening of The Wave, visual improvements to the town centre, and the demolition of the BIP factory site ready for a high class business development mean that people are starting to see for themselves the results of our labour."
