Feedback sought on 25-year vision for Carlisle

Plotting a course for the city’s future over the next quarter-century, Cumberland Council wants to hear from stakeholders to further shape how it guides development.

The local authority said that, from earlier phases of consultation with community and stakeholders, the masterplan as it stands sets out a vision and a strategy for Carlisle that considers economic, social and environmental aspects of the city.

This document proposes a wide range of potential projects of varying scale and complexity, which will help to deliver the vision over the lifespan of the plan.

Broadly, two separate strands are included: the wider city, looking at strategic growth areas and connections; and the city centre, focusing on regeneration and placemaking

Cumberland said: “Carlisle has benefited from an ongoing process of regeneration with recent investments of over £300m, bringing significant enhancements to the city.

“All of the proposals in the masterplan will require further detailed feasibility assessment and design prior to being confirmed and delivered.”

In the city centre, much focus has been on the two-phase southern gateway project to improve the areas around Carlisle’s Citadel station, while on the commercial side, recent developments coming forward include a £12m Premier Inn at West Walls.

As for the wider city, much hope is pinned on the Carlisle Southern Link Road, opened on 12 June. This £260m five-mile highway links the M6 to the A595, and is expected to open up development opportunities such as St Cuthbert’s Garden Village.

Mott MacDonald is working with the council on the consultation, which is open until 31 July.
