Redevelopment cued up for Hazel Grove school
Tilbury Douglas is on board as main contractor as plans to demolish Moorfield Primary School’s existing buildings and replace them on the same site in the Stockport suburb head to committee.
Stockport Council’s Stepping Hill area committee will next week be asked to pass comment on the application, before it moves on to the local authority’s main planning & highways committee.
Ellis Williams Architects has designed the redevelopment, with a project team involved that also includes planner Iceni Projects, BWB Consulting, TACE, SkW Consultancy, ONE FFE, OFR Consultants, AEC, Vietec, Local Tranpsort Projects, Urban Green, and Majenta Solutions.
Classed as a public services infrastructure development, planning permission is sought for phased demolition and the construction of a 28,000 sq ft replacement school that includes a new part single, part two-storey school building, installation of ground source heat pumps, a multi use games area and a sub-station.
Changes would also be made to access points and car park layout, with landscaping added. The application also covers temporary classroom units and a temporary parking compound at a nearby plot known as land to the north of Lyndhurst Avenue.
Moorfield is a two-form entry school, accommodating up to 420 pupils.
The projects comes under the Department for Education’s School Rebuilding Programme, announced to carry out major rebuilding and refurbishment projects at school and sixth form college buildings across England, with buildings prioritised according to their condition – Moorfield is regarded as in a poor state.
No changes are proposed for the school’s sports field, which is shared with the adjoining Hazel Grove High.
Education is proving an area of strength for Tilbury Douglas, which has this month put in plans for another primary replacement in Liverpool – a project involving a slight relocation to a former fruit and veg market site.
The firm is also working with Ellis Williams on primary replacements at Barton Clough, Stretford, and in Denton, where consent was given in April for the replacement of the severely outdated Russell Scott Primary.
