Renaker acquires 1,000-home Manchester opportunity

The prolific Manchester developer has bought five acres on Rochdale Road from Realty Estates.

Renaker, which has around 10,000 apartments across towers either completed, in planning, or under construction at Great Jackson Street in Manchester and Greengate in Salford, has now set its sights on another part of the city.

The Rochdale Road plot falls within the £4bn Victoria North masterplan.

An indicative vision for the site drawn up by AHR Architects shows a 31-storey tower and several smaller blocks comprising 977 apartments.

Daren Whitaker, managing director of Renaker, said: “We are pleased to have acquired this brownfield site, which sat underutilised for many years.

“We now look forward to working on regeneration proposals moving forward.”

JLL advised Realty Estates on the deal and Renaker acted for itself.

The developer is also understood to have bought a second, smaller site nearby on the corner of Rochdale Road and Thompson Street.

There are several large residential schemes emerging in the area, including MCR Property’s 1,200-home Gasworks development on the opposite side of Rochdale Road.

FEC recently submitted a hybrid application to transform 30 acres in the Red Bank area of the city, north of Renaker’s newly acquired site. FEC is seeking full planning permission to deliver 1,550 homes off Dantzic Street, as well as outline permission for a further 3,250 houses in the area.

If Renaker are taking this on then hopefully the amount of storeys will increase to something of note like 70

Crikey, what a city we are becoming! These guys will do it too.

Fantastic news, projects like this are really pulling the city center outwards in all directions. Will be at least double its current size in the next 10 years. We just need a proper transport system now, that is fit for a 3million population and the 21st century.

Looks really bland. Hoping these are just massing blocks and the final design will take inspiration from the excellent architecture at Victoria North nearby. And please, no random cladding!

Re Giant skyscraper fan.
Agree. I wish Manchester would build some statement buildings that also look unique.

This is great, really expanding the city outwards and densifying a main corridor like Rochdale Rd. Would love to see more detailed proposals for this area quite soon

Are there enough under 30s for all of these apartments?

Daren Whitaker should run this country. He is so ambitious for Manchester, and he just gets on with it. There will be shovels in the ground, by July probably for this. He should have built HS2, it would have been in Aberdeen now.

Again for private rental or purchase, where and when are councils going to start building for social housing. With regards to the high rise fans, they do nothing but alienate people, you don’t see your neighbours from one week to another. They may look good from the outside but living in one is a nightmare

Great that Renaker involved in this this area. The city really is expanding now!

This is truly awful.
