PODCAST | Scheming with Stephen Hodder
The first episode of season two of Scheming sees Place chat with a Stirling Prize winner and one of Manchester’s best-known architects about the projects that have shaped his career.
Stephen Hodder, founder of Hodder+Partners, discusses the part he played in rebuilding Manchester after the IRA bomb, the project that put him on the map, and striking a balance between preserving history and embracing modernity.
Scheming is a Place North podcast series that provides some of the biggest names in property the chance to talk about three schemes they think about a lot:
- The one they are most proud of
- The one that got away
- Their dream scheme
As well as discussing his three schemes, Hodder talked about what winning the Sterling Prize in 1996 for the Centenary Building in Salford did for his career.
“I was only 39 and suddenly we were competing against some big names,” he said. “There were only six of us in the practice well, so we were working really hard, long nights and and I don’t think we were prepared for what followed.
“There was no doubt that it really catapulted the practice to another level.”
