Old Altrincham hospital set for wellbeing hub
Trafford Council is due to approve plans for the redevelopment of the former Altrincham General Hospital site into an 88,000 sq ft health and wellbeing centre, built around the hospital’s Victorian façade.
The hospital on Regent Road has been vacant since the services were relocated to a 75,000 sq ft new-build facility on Railway Street in 2015, built by developer Pochin’s in partnership with Citybranch.
Citybranch is bringing forward the project on the one-acre old hospital site, on behalf of the NHS Trafford Clinical Commissioning Group.
Designed by AFL Architects, the scheme will see the demolition of the existing buildings, and the reconstruction of the original façade, which dates from the 1870s, to a new site to the North East of its current location.
The four-storey wellbeing hub will then be built behind the façade, and will include a library, pharmacy, café, retail, public health services and GP practices.
There will also be new public realm, with a square built around Pott Street.
The facility will be accessed off Greenwood Street.
Trafford Council is due to meet to discuss the plans on Thursday 11 February.
Anything better than what’s there now, but I don’t think Alty needs more retail space. The success of the market v the number of empty shops says it all. People want a leisure/food offer in Altrincham-almost an overspill to the market, because it’s impossible to guarantee a table/seat in there at any time of day…
