Nobel Prize winner to deliver MIPIM 2026 keynote
Philippe Aghion, who won this year’s economics prize for his theory of “creative destruction”, will deliver an address that centres on the role innovation and technology can play in urban development.
MIPIM will bring together more than 20,000 public and private sector property professionals from 90 countries when the expo opens on 9 March in the South of France. This year’s conference will host conversations around artificial intelligence, data centres, sustainability, and how one can turn technological change into a strategic advantage.
This fits in well with Aghion’s work. The Collège de France and INSEAD professor was awarded the Nobel Prize alongside Peter Howitt for their work in studying the mechanisms of sustained growth. Technology and innovation are at the heart of this, the two concluded, and the government must play a role in encouraging change.
The theory gets its “creative destruction” descriptor for its explanation of how, when a new product is introduced, its out-of-date predecessors suffer. A crucial element of this revolves around the role the public sector must play in encouraging change, even when it leads to the demise of familiar products and modus operandi. Public policy can and should boost productivity, they concluded.
In addition to being a Nobel Prize winner, Aghion’s CV includes being the co-chair of the French Artificial Intelligence Commission and a sting at deputy chief economist at the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development.
“I am excited to open the next MIPIM with a keynote,” Aghion said.
“Having dedicated my life to exploring how to make our economies more creative and competitive, I look forward to sharing my thoughts on how cities and industries can best nurture innovation and phase out obsolete practices to drive long-term prosperity.”
Nicolas Boffi, MIPIM director for the convention’s owner RX, said: “Philippe Aghion’s presence as keynote speaker at the 36th edition of MIPIM speaks to our commitment: helping industry leaders understand the profound economic and technological shifts shaping cities and markets.
“His pioneering work on growth and innovation offers crucial insights for investors, policymakers, and real estate professionals. At a time when technology and innovation are reshaping cities and markets, when AI is changing everything we do, his perspective will help leaders navigate these transformations with confidence.”
MIPIM will be held at the Palais des Festivals in Cannes from 9-13 March 2026. Last year, attendees included 70% of the world’s top investment managers, who collectively handle more than €4tn in assets.
