Samlesbury link road opens today

A link road between the A677 and the A59, designed to cut congestion and improve access to the Samlesbury Aerospace Enterprise Zone and BAE Systems’ site, is due to open to the public at 12pm today.

The road, named after the former chairman of British Aerospace Sir Frederick Page, will improve access to the Enterprise Zone, which is home to BAE Systems, BAE’s Academy, and the Wincanton Defence and Logistics Centre.

The 1.3 mile stretch of road connects the A677 near to Samlesbury Hall, and the A59 near the Mellor Brook roundabout. Speed limits are set to 30mph and the road is designated as a clearway, meaning vehicles cannot stop or park at any time.

The Enterprise Zone is one of four sites of its type in Lancashire and the infrastructure programme around the site is designed to attract more business to the area.

BAE completed its £16m academy in December 2016, while contractor Pochin’s completed the 180,000 sq ft Defence and Logistics Centre in 2017.
