Structural completion for £24m Alder Hey extension

Morgan Sindall Construction is targeting a 2026 handover for the 33,000 sq ft scheme, which features a surgical neonatal intensive care unit and an expanded emergency care facility at the Liverpool children’s hospital.

The Alder Hey project will see the emergency floor expanded to house paediatricians, emergency care clinicians, advanced clinical practitioners, and primary care and support workers.

Within the £24m extension, a 16-bed assessment unit, an urgent treatment centre, and a purpose-built same-day emergency care facility will be operated on the ground floor.

On the first floor, the neonatal intensive care unit will provide care for newborns and parents with specialist staff including consultant neonatologists, consultant neonatal surgeons, advanced nurse practitioners, and specialist neonatal nurses.

The NICU is the result of a partnership between Alder Hey and Liverpool Women’s Hospital, known as the Liverpool Neonatal Partnership – the NICU’s development was set in motion with a £3m injection from Alder Hey Children’s Charity.

Morgan Sindall began building the project in April 2024.

Up to £9m in funding for the wider project was awarded via the national Urgent and Emergency Care scheme, which is linked to individual NHS trust performance. Alder Hey Children’s Charity committed a further £1m to the scheme.

Steven Gregory, North West area director at Morgan Sindall Construction, said: “We’re incredibly proud to be working with Alder Hey on such a transformative project that is helping to support the local economy throughout the build programme by creating valuable jobs.

“The building being structurally complete is a significant milestone and a testament to the collaborative effort of everyone involved.

“This facility will have a profound and lasting impact on the lives of children, young people, and their families across Liverpool and beyond, and we’re honoured to be playing a part in delivering the Hospital’s vision.”

John Grinnell, chief executive at Alder Hey, said: “I am so pleased to see how well this complex build is taking shape, which is a testament to the professionalism and collaboration of everyone involved.

“This is more than a building – it’s a symbol of our ambition, our partnerships, and our belief in a better future for every child.”

“We look forward to opening the doors in 2026 – and to the lives that will be changed within these walls.”

To pinch a phrase from Steve Rotheram, but this hospital is actually world-class.
Also in building terms it is very striking and you can’t help but be impressed when you drive past, and this new facility will just boost it’s reputation.
