Cheshire West and Chester Council has agreed terms on a land deal with Rothstone Estates that will see the retailer deliver an 18,000 sq ft foodhall on the site of a former depot off Leicester Street.

Plans for the shop will see M&S return to Northwich six years after closing its previous store at 21 Leicester Street at Barons Quay, a decision that ended an 111-year presence in the town.

A planning application for the scheme, which will be located next to Aldi, is expected in the coming weeks.

A consultation on the proposals is now open

Mark Rothery, managing director of Rothstone Estates, said: “We are delighted to be working with M&S on these proposals, which represent an opportunity to bring a high-quality, modern retail use back to the heart of the town.

“Working closely with M&S, we are bringing forward plans for a best- in-class Foodhall that would support the vitality of the town centre and provide further food retail choice for shoppers.”

Cllr Nathan Pardoe, member for inclusive economy, regeneration and digital transformation at Cheshire West & Chester Council, described M&S impending return to Northwich as “great news” for the town.

“Cheshire West and Chester Council has worked very hard to bring Marks & Spencer back to Northwich through their development partner, Rothstone, and we are delighted to be set to welcome them back.

“A new Marks & Spencer store will make the strong retail offer that Northwich already has even better.”
