McLaren completes £30m Manchester PBSA

Funded by Barings, the 321-bed St Gabriel’s Court project off Oxford Place comprises a mix of studios and cluster apartments across refurbished and new-build elements.

McLaren Construction’s North West and Midlands division, which began work in summer 2023, has handed over the £30m student accommodation project to McLaren Property and Barings.

Designed by SimpsonHaugh Architects, the St Gabriel’s Court scheme included the renovation of St Gabriels Lodge, the 1963 chapel and Woodthorpe Hall.

Two new-build four- and five-storey buildings were delivered using pre-cast concrete panels and other modern methods of construction. They bookend the two-acre site, located close to the University of Manchester and Manchester Metropolitan University.

Darren Harding, divisional director at McLaren Construction Midlands and North, said: “St Gabriel’s Court blends heritage refurbishment with modern construction to provide much-needed, high-quality student accommodation, diversifying the options for university goers in the heart of the city.

“This scheme is testament to our regional capability and commitment to sustainability.”

What an absolute carbuncle set of buildings. Still, lots of trees though which is good to see.

Fantastic to see these buildings brought back to life. Hopefully this will kick start improving the period villas along the road.

Looks fantastic. Nice looking new buildings and a great example of enabling development which allows for the reuse of the existing buildings which would otherwise have been left to deteriorate.
