Net World Sports readies 52-acre Wrexham ecology corridor
Permission has been secured for the proposals, which will enable the retailer to push forward with plans for more than 1.6m sq ft of development at Wrexham Industrial Estate.
Mauna Kea, a fully owned subsidiary of Net World Sports, led on the application for the strategic ecology corridor. The 52-acre corridor consists of three plots: one off Francis Lane, another adjacent to the B5130, and one off Maesgwyn Lane. All three had been designated for agricultural use and sit on the boundaries of the industrial estate.
The idea for a strategic ecology corridor came from discussions Mauna Kea had with Natural Resource Wales and Wrexham County Council regarding the brand’s proposals for a 1.4m sq ft complex known as Utopia City, which would sit off Bryn Lane. The corridor enables Mauna Kea to require the required biodiversity uplift to enable its future applications, without sacrificing the developable land.
As part of the corridor plans, 170 trees would be planted, 37 ponds created, and 1,000 linear feet of hedgerows planted. Bunds would be installed, thickets added, and hibernacula (shelters suitable for hibernating animals) – created.
Carter Jonas, Tier Consult, The Environment Partnership, and Nicholsons all helped craft the ecology corridor plans. You can learn more about the corridor by searching reference P/2025/0431 on Wrexham County Council’s planning portal.
The proposals the ecology corridor will service include the aforementioned Utopia City, a 156,800 sq ft warehouse on south of Bryn Lane, and future plans to expand the Net World Sports headquarters.
You can learn more about Utopia City and the 156,800 sq ft shed by searching reference numbers P/2023/0497 and P/2025/0143, respectively, on Wrexham County Council’s planning portal. Plans have not been revealed for the growth at the headquarters.
