Denbighshire Royal Hotel revamp to include spa, restaurant

The grade two-listed hotel sits next to one of the seven wonders of Wales – the Llangollen Bridge.

Mavi Properties has secured planning permission for its extensive renovation program for The Royal Hotel, which will see the 24,000 sq ft sq ft hotel grow by a third.

Designed by C4 Projects, the nearly 8,000 sq ft new-build extension includes a spa that will face out on the River Dee. The spa will have two plunge pools, a relaxation area, spa treatment rooms, a thermal sauna and salt rooms. Above the relaxation hotspot will be 11 additional hotel rooms.

To make space for the spa and new rooms, the hotel’s 1960s flat roof extension will be demolished.

Renovations also are planned to change the layout of the hotel, adding a restaurant, bar and riverside bistro.

In total, the project amounts to a £6.5m investment, according to North Wales Live.

The Royal Hotel in Llangollen has been closed in 2019, and work began on the project in May prior to planning approval being granted. The Royal Hotel dates back to the 18th century. The building originally was known as the King’s Head, before being renamed in 1832 as The Royal Hotel after Princess Victoria visited with her mother.

The project team for the changes to the hotel includes Kingfisher Lighting, Caulmert, Atmos Consulting and Stephen Cutmore Arboricultural & Ecological Services. Knights Construction Group is the main contractor.
