Cumberland consents 328 homes on former chemical factory
Persimmon Homes has been granted permission for its plans to redevelop land previously occupied by the Marchon plant, which is located near to the site of the quashed £165m Whitehaven coal mine.
Cumberland Council’s planning committee met this week to determine the housebuilder’s 328-home hybrid application and voted in favour of it in line with officer recommendations.
Persimmon’s scheme, which offers views out over the Irish Sea, will be constructed on part of the former Marchon Chemical Factory off High Road in Whitehaven across two phases.
The first phase comprises 139 dwellings and the second phase is made up of another 189 homes. This amounts to a reduction of almost 200 units compared to the original proposals lodged in September 2021.
The scheme is located close to the land West Cumbria Mining had earmarked for a controversial coal mine. WCM secured approval locally and nationally but withdrew its plans earlier this year after the High Court intervened.
