Wyre signs off plans for Fleetwood seafront rejuvenation

The council has identified four projects it believes could breathe new life into the town’s ailing waterfront.

Wyre Council last night signed off a masterplan for the rejuvenation of Fleetwood’s waterfront, paving the way for a business cases for the projects to be worked up.

The quartet of schemes comprises:

  • Redevelopment of Marine Hall – creation of a mixed-use facility featuring a restaurant, offices, and event space
  • Refurbishment of Fleetwood Leisure Centre – A c£16m project to upgrade existing facilities and adding a climbing wall and repositioning the complex as a health and wellness centre
  • Improvements to the public realm – reconfiguration of the promenade
  • Development of a Beach Huts accommodation offer – conversion of beach huts into standalone glamping pods to “tap into the staycation market”, the council said.

The Fleetwood strategy is aimed at transforming the waterfront in a bid to boost tourism and the local economy.

IBI Group, part of Arcadis, has been advising Wyre Council on the plans.

Brilliant. It’s a lovely place and nice to see some more investment in the area.

Hi, this is great news. As a child we always went to Fleetwood for our annual holiday, Fleetwood has always had a special place in my heart. I now have two grandsons and have taken them there for day trips over the years. It saddens me to see the decline of the prom, I could never understand why the pier area has never been developed. The gardens where the crazy golf and putting and trampolines used to be need to be returned, I’m sure with visiting families that would generate income for the council. I often just go for nostalgic trips and a walk or cycle and it upsets me to see the marine hall looking so sad, I could never understand why this was being allowed to happen, it’s such a beautiful building with so much potential to bring money into fleetwood, the gardens surrounding the hall used to be immaculate, maybe a friend’s of the marine hall group of volunteers could be started to look after the gardens. The beach huts could really generate money for Fleetwood. I really hope all the plans go ahead and Fleetwood becomes a great place for families to visit.

Born in flertwood in 1938,have seen so many loses ,fishing trawlers, Isle of man boats ,railway that building was an icon and should never have been demolished.it’s good to see plans for our home town, any improvement would be very welcome .

It makes a change Fleetwood having money spent on it but I’ll believe it when I see it

I used love staying in Fleetwood. Unfortunately the market has gone down, the pier gone, and Asda has destroyed the best local shopping area. I’m looking forward to seeing what you do.Glamping pods No leave as family beach huts.

Is the pool still staying

Signed Off? Has anyone seen it? I work away so may have missed the presentation of the proposal.Just need to avoid the mistake of the cheap bricks of the swimming pool and Court room and keep it low enough so the horizon isn’t blocked out from the top of the Mount. We get so few chances to improve town…let’s not blow it on cheap tacky options.Let the locals run with final design….not someone in White Elephant Towers on Breck Rd.

To be honest the facilities are nice just the way they are. Rare that a town keeps it’s identity that way,its what makes Fleetwood the gem that it is.
Hope that any alterations will be sympathetic and minimal.

Is that not what the Marine hall is already??? But WBC charge so much for its use no one uses it? The wyre lounge used to be a great place to go for a good quality beer and it wouldn’t be too much to add food there too as there are kitchens (once again disused)

The council should be improving its connectivity by actively helping to reopen the railway line that still exists and went to ICI at Thornton. It should also be brought back into the Harbourside with a rebuilt station on the original site and allow people to travel to Pulton-Le-Fylde for the mainline to Preston and beyond. Best would be to restore it as a tourist heritage railway with a regular daily service along with the heritage trains assuming that it would be largely volunteer staffed.

They should have focused on the old docks that are a total eyesore!!

What about What needs doing the most, Fleetwood beach! Get rid of all the grass. Question is is it a field or a beach? I know which I would sooner see on holiday BEACH! Please 🙏

I’m glad to see some money finally coming this way, the town desperately needs investment. Sadly, besides the beautiful sunset views, there is almost nothing to keep people here once they arrive…Blackpool is always just a tram ride away and has so much to offer in the way of entertainment and shopping. Hopefully, this is the beginning of an investment boom to bring some life back to this place

I was born in Fleetwood and just love the town. Do hope this investment comes to fruition. Start with the boating lake, as a kid you could hire boats etc. Could this be brought back. This ‘end’of the promenade
offers much potential, the model yacht lake with ‘world class crabbing. Never forget the free parking which is a tremendous benefit and can be exploited more. Moving along the icon of Fleetwood The Mount. Nothing compares anywhere on the Fylde – and right opposite the magnificent Marine Hall.
The market has reinvigorated, you only have to see visitors pouring off the trams at the bottom of market – Oh yes shout from the houses about the tram network, another fantastic attraction for Fleetwoo
Look how much Doreen Lofthouse has given to Fleetwood and is still being continued through her family
I can only wish the town prosperity moving forwards

Are you building new beach huts ?

Not before time Fleetwood has always been the poor relation in Wyre borough councils eyes yet they have taken so much

The only way to bring Fleetwood back to life is reinvest in the Fishing Industry.

The old 9 hole pitch and put should be fenced in a camping pods pla Ed on there with toilets and acces to water etc with fire pits and a possible adventure park for climbing swinging balancing etc..
Would bring massive revenue and get people staying over night. Even try it as a camp site with spaces secure for tents maybe ?
Such a vast space used for nothing.

This IBI Group are they based in Fleetwood? First I’ve heard of this didn’t know the seafront was open to ideas.

Be nice if they funded the ferry to Knott end for the tourists using some of the millions that were gifted to them from lofthousem

Lovely too see investment coming to our town , camping pods will put our limited hotels under more pressure to survive. Turning them into Food-huts that people can rent cheap to help small business get up and running as people can’t afford shops as some the overheads are too high.Barbecue areas along the prom would be great as well rather than people lighting them on the grass etc

By Anonymous

The old ro-ro ferry terminal would be ideal to build a dedicated events space. Marine lake is also a wasted asset.

By David

Fleetwood needs a great deal more than is being planned

By Anonymous

Great! BUT the article doesn’t say investment is guaranteed but that it allows for business cases to now progress! Don’t get your hopes up. Where is the money coming from..

By Anonymous

The investment that’s needed in Fleetwood is to create much needed permanent employment in the leisure, retail and information sectors. I can’t see how converting the currently popular family beach huts into luxury glamping ‘pods’ is going to radically improve Fleetwood’s fortunes. I’m all for any suggestions to improve this sadly neglected town but feel that more liason is needed with the local community

By Anonymous

Will never happen council can’t even fix the small roundabout top of beach road it’s been full of potholes for years

By Anonymous

Great news for Fleetwood, as a local resident I always feel that Fleetwood has been abandoned. It has become so run down. Fingers crossed some money can be invested in the town centre so visitors can browse, shop, eat and enjoy their visit.

By Anonymous

To bring work to Fleetwood an up to date built for purpose refuse recycling service. Council officials can learn from Shrewsbury. Use the investment wisely and earn inco6from it.

Not before time, I hope I’m still alive when it is completed

By Mrs Norma Sims

Good to see the proposals but surely redevelopment of the spare land that was the old container port and is an eyesore at the moment.

By Anonymous

Hope this all comes to fruition. I am a regular visitor to the central car park with my campervan staying for 2 nights. I love the area and what the council provide. However there is very little going on in the town, especially in the winter months so any additional experiences would be a benefit to the area.

By Briggsy1962

pods do you really think they would be any good most people can’t afford to stay in them the charges are ridiculous a
s well as the see front spend money in the town and the old docks what you going to do let it rot and just expect visitors to stay away from the town

By Anonymous

There I’d no point on opening new business at seafront she there is not a BANK in town business can’t trade without a bank

By Mike Reynolds

Some great ideas to give life back to the sea front area. The Marine Hall is a jewel that has faded, prohibitive costs exclude local groups/schools from hiring us it sits empty on lots of occasions. Introduce a wider variety of shows/events. Make use of the beautiful outdoor space. In the past the gardens overflowed with beautiful plant displays and tourists listening to brass band music. The music has changed, but the venue lends itself to outdoor concerts and music events – offer young local bands the chance to showcase and engage the youth who constantly complain there is nothing available for them. A substitute for the pier would be lovely, but seems unattainable. A refurb of the Sports Centre is also a good idea. The outdoor space latterly pitch and put and bowling greens were massive draws for both families and competitive players. Something similar ought to be introduced instead of leaving the space ‘wild’ for dog walkers. Following with interest.

Please consider reinstating the Pier, everyone likes a pier and it will bring so many tourists to our outdated town

I often visit Fleetwood with my husband & as Fleetwood stands we often see the same people & inturn have made very good friends & enjoyed New Years Eve. Fleetwood could thrive again with the right planning

Been at war with the council about the Maine hall the past year and was only told last month that there was no money for the place then this comes out
