County broadband project comes to market

Lancashire County Council is to advertise for a technology supplier to deliver a new countywide super-fast broadband network by 2014.

The local authority hopes the new infrastructure will stimulate enterprise activity in rural areas, increase productivity and attract investment.

Phil Halsall, chief executive of the county council, said: "This is about establishing a new business generation in Lancashire. With the right infrastructure, we can unlock the potential in the county's economy for the benefit of the people we serve."

The leader of the county council has approved the plans, which will be confirmed in a report to Cabinet on Thursday 3 February.
