Completion for ‘flagship’ Maryport Activity Centre

The leisure scheme forms part of the wider £12m transformation of the Cumbria town.

Maryport Activity Centre features a bespoke play area, a large gym and a fitness studio complete with changing rooms and showers, as well as catering and community group facilities with multifunctional uses.

Designed to reflect Maryport, the play area will include obstacles, slides, a Roman watchtower, and a Northern Lights display all with a sea-life-themed backdrop.

A mini soft play area will accommodate younger children. In addition, improvements will be made to ‘Clip n’ Climb’, an interactive climbing experience for children.

Flimby-based Thomas Armstrong Construction was the main contractor, working with architects at Align Property Partners who have offices in Cockermouth and Kendal.

Cllr Mark Fryer, Leader of Cumberland Council, said: “People are amazed by the transformation of this building.

“I need to thank the council’s Maryport regeneration team for pushing so hard to create something so impressive that will become a destination for locals and visitors alike.

“Also thank you to our partners at GLL and our contractors Thomas Armstrong Construction. This is a flagship project in the £12m regeneration of Maryport and it is fantastic to see the results.”

The project is part of the regeneration of Maryport, a vision that includes improvements to Maryport’s harbour, which will get a splash park and a pop-up stage area with ‘amphitheatre-style’ outdoor seating.

Thomas Armstrong Construction has also recently taken over another Maryport project. The firm is on site at the Maryport Maritime Museum, taking over from Aura Heritage, which went bust in July.
