Torus secures approval for affordable St Helens resi
Formerly occupied by an apartment building, the two-acre brownfield plot off South John Street will feature 32 residences in a mix of houses and flats under the housebuilder’s plans.
St Helens Council has followed officer recommendations to approve Torus Developments’ wholly-affordable residential proposals, with every home to be offered at a social rent.
The Halsall Lloyd Partnership-designed scheme will provide 11 two-, eight three-, and nine four-bedroom houses, as well as four one-bedroom apartments.
Housing Maintenance Solutions has been appointed as the main contractor to deliver the scheme, while Torus will retain and manage the properties.
Torus was granted permission in 2020 to demolish the former Parr Mount Court apartment block on site for redevelopment. The building “no longer met modern standards” and subsequently fell into disrepair, according to a council report.
Plans were submitted for the scheme in July as part of Torus’ plans to invest in and regenerate eight sites across the borough.
Last month, the housebuilder started work on 40 homes at Somerset Street in Parr and broke ground to deliver 77 units at Rutland Street in Cowley Hill.
Other earmarked sites are Sussex Grove, Atlas Street, Park Road, Holly Bank Street, and Chancery Lane.
Stantec advised on the proposals. The project team also includes SCP, Shape Consulting Engineers, and Ascerta.
