Tech co-op to open in Piccadilly

Manchester's growing creative and digital sector is to benefit from another commercial facility, a shared space for freelancers and start-ups in Carvers Warehouse, Piccadilly Basin.

London-based TechHub is opening its first base outside the capital, promising to create a 'community and workspace for innovative technology start-ups'.

The collaboration space will open in mid-November. TechHub has agreed terms with landlord Town Centre Securities, for more than 3,000 sq ft across two floors in Carver's Warehouse.

The Manchester base will include 50 permanent desks for resident start-ups, and 'drop-in' work space for annual members requiring an occasional space to touch down. There will be support to foster relationships with large firms, plus the opportunity to network with national and international start-ups both in person and through the online TechHub network.

Elizabeth Varley, chief executive of TechHub, said: "We couldn't be more delighted to be joining forces with the team at TechHub Manchester, or more excited about the innovation and talent we've seen on our visits to the city. Right now, Manchester is buzzing, and we see it as an excellent addition to the growing TechHub network. I'm looking forward to greater collaboration between entrepreneurs and tech companies in the North and South of England."

Richard Lewis, property director of Town Centre Securities, said: "This is a real coup for Manchester. To secure the first UK TechHub outside London is recognition of Manchester's ambition to be the UK's digital city and a major player in the global digital technology sector by 2020. TCS has its own aspirations to develop and support this sector, which has huge potential for growth. Carver's Warehouse in Piccadilly Basin, right next to the city's Northern Quarter and minutes from Piccadilly Station, is an ideal location for TechHub to be based."

Sir Richard Leese, leader of Manchester City Council, said: "Town Centre Securities is doing exactly what the city needs by delivering TechHub, a unique space for the technology sector which will further Manchester's ambition of becoming a global digital city by 2020."
