Tameside looks to kick on in Droylsden with double land deal

Two slithers of land required to maximise the potential of regeneration efforts in the town are to be acquired.

TrueNorth Partnerships, which is developing two residential proposals at Droylsden Marina – including 192 affordable homes on land it is in the process of buying from the council – has agreed terms with Watkin Jones for two small but consequential plots, according to council documents.

Watkin Jones owns the land having previously been Tameside’s development partner in Droylsden. That agreement was terminated in 2024 and now the council wants to take back control of the two plots, which bookend the aforementioned scheme.

One is located at the frontage of TrueNorth’s Marina scheme and is needed to maximise the public realm. The project is being developed in joint venture with CERT Property, with L&G lined up to operate it upon completion.

Plans have been lodged and a determination is expected before Christmas. Subject to planning approval, the land deal could complete in January with work commencing on site in March.

The second plot is located next to Manchester Road and is “a key requirement in the delivery of this transformational proposal outlined in the town centre masterplan”, according to a Tameside Council report.

The site was previously an arm of the Hollinwood Canal. It connected to the marina and ran under Manchester Road between Tesco and Droylsden Shopping Centre.

The vision is to “re-activate this space, creating a new town centre park and active travel route”, the council said.
