St Modwen prepares to start Flintshire scheme

Developer St Modwen expects to begin construction work on its £15m district centre in Connah's Quay before the end of the year.

The build contract has been tendered, Paul Batho, senior development manager at St Modwen said, although the winning contractor has not been named.

The development is anchored by a 52,000 sq ft Morrisons food store and is due to be completed in summer 2010.

Tenants at the original centre, now demolished, have started signing up to the new scheme, which will comprise 20,000 sq ft of complementary retail space. An MOT centre and a chip shop are the first to agree leasehold deals.

Batho said: "It's great news that we can accommodate some of the old retailers in the new scheme.

"They were part of the original development and will no doubt enjoy the opportunity to move into improved business space and trade alongside national retailers. We look forward to making some more announcements about tenants in the near future."

The plans include enlarging the car park to provide 325 spaces, introducing disabled, motorcycle and cycle parking facilities, improving pedestrian links to and within the centre, and providing a bus pick-up point.

Outline planning consent was granted to St Modwen in April 2008 by Flintshire Council. Detailed planning consent was granted in July this year.
