Plans in for Oldham health centre

Set off Westway on the site of the former Shaw Baths, the three-storey Shaw and Crompton Health & Wellbeing Hub would be able to provide medical care to more than 13,000 patients.

If approved by Oldham Council, the United Healthcare Developments project would be the new home of the Oak Gables Partnership and Village Medical Practice. Both GP services are currently based at Crompton Health Centre, a 1970s building that offers the surgeries no room to expand.

Combined, the surgeries have a patient list of around 12,700. They expect that list to grow by more than 500 patients a year as the surrounding area undergoes an economic regeneration.

The new facility, designed by PRP Architects, would have more than 18,400 sq ft of internal floorspace spread out across three floors.

The proposals also include a 54-space car park, with four spaces reserved for those who are disabled. There would also be six electric vehicle charging spaces and storage for 28 cycles, according to the project’s design and access statement.

Plans for a primary care centre on the old Shaw Baths site were first proposed in 2009.

The project team for this most recent proposal includes PRP Northampton on flood risk and drainage strategy, PDA on noise, Envirotech on biodiversity net gain, and The Transportation Consultancy on transport.

The application reference number for the project with Oldham Council is FUL/349659/22.

What’s the point of wasting money on a new health centre when you can’t even get in to see the doctor? Can’t e en get a blood test done there anymore either. Our doctors were moved out of Crompton Health Centre because of lack of space. We were told we had to relocate to Royton on a temporary basis – now we find out only the current Crompton surgeries will move into the new health centre.
