Peel revives Port of Warrington project
Plans for the creation of a rail freight terminal at Acton Grange next to the Manchester Ship Canal have remerged 15 years after they were approved, with a couple of warehouses now thrown into the mix.
The Manchester Ship Canal Company, controlled by Peel Ports, has lodged early stage proposals for the project to Warrington Council.
Peel bought the 40-acre site in 2007 with a plan to refurbish a redundant berth on the canal and reinstate a railway line.
Warrington approved those plans in 2010 but only the berth works were carried out.
The latest plans once again put forward the idea of a rail line, which would link the port to the West Coast Mainline, increasing transport options at the port.
The canal berth would also be extended by 25 metres to accommodate larger vessels.
Peel will also seek consent for two warehouses totaling around 160,000 sq ft on the 13.4-acre site, the plans state.
Pegasus is advising Peel on the plans.
Peel was contacted for comment.

Shouldn’t they be focusing on getting the Port (Shed) Salford rail link built first?

Invest in repairing the swing bridges you are responsible for first before they crumble into the ship canal.

Can it really be a commercial scheme to tranship containers to a barge for a slow 20 miles by river and canal and still end up on lorries?
