Peel-Barratt bring forward Wigan housing

Civil engineering firm Jones Bros has completed the £1.3m remediation of the former Pemberton Colliery ahead of residential development by Peel Group and Barratt.

The redundant colliery is being transformed into a 195-unit housing estate as part of the partnership agreed between Peel and Barratt last year.

Jones Bros excavated and deposited 660,000m3 of material across the site and completed bio-remediation of hydrocarbon-impacted soils. The material was excavated and encapsulated within a contained cell, which was buried at depth. This avoided the need for materials to be transported off site, saving money and minimising the project's environmental impact.

Jones Bros has also created a series of interconnected lagoons to enable water from rainfall watercourses to be used for dust suppression.

Ivan Rawlins, senior contracts manager at Jones Bros, said: "The Peel Group is well-known for its innovative regeneration schemes, so we are proud to be completing our first contract for them.

"This has been a fascinating job to be involved in, with many technical challenges to be overcome. We look forward to working with Peel again in future."

Philip Rothwell, planning director at Peel, said: "Jones Bros has employed the latest methods in value engineering to ensure this 22-week contract was completed in a timely manner, despite the unseasonably wet weather we have been experiencing."
