Path clear for nearly 200 homes in Warrington

Bellway Homes has secured planning permission from the local authority for the seventh phase of the Omega South project on the former RAF Burtonwood Airfield.

The approval was granted by Warrington Council’s planning department this week using delegated powers. The housebuilder plans to start onsite as soon as possible, according to a press release.

The decision to approve the application follows a series of changes to the proposals, which were originally submitted in November 2022. These changes include decreasing the number of homes on the 14-acre site from 205 to 195.

Of the 195 approved homes, 49 are to be designated affordable. These include 37 one-, two-, and three-bed houses. There will also be 12 two-bed affordable flats built in a three-storey apartment building.

The remaining 146 proposed market properties are a mixture of detached, semi-detached, and terraced houses. They offer between three and five bedrooms.

There are 20 different house types in Bellway’s plans for the site, which were drawn up by Astle Planning and Design.

Each of the homes will have dedicated parking, with those living in the apartments having access to a parking court.

Lichfields is the planning consultant for the project. Senior planner Clover Long said: “This new phase of development will deliver sustainable, accessible housing, in close proximity to good local services and facilities in Westbrook and Great Sankey”.

Long added later: “We continue to work with property developers and local planning authorities across the North West region to ensure schemes like this one are both viable and a welcome addition to local areas, contributing towards providing high-quality homes for local people.”

In addition to Lichfields and APD, the project team includes landscape architect Highstone Design, drainage strategist MONO, flood risk consultant Waterco, and CBO Transport.

The seventh phase of Omega South follows from a wider outline planning application approval in December 2020 for phases four to seven. This approval allows the building of up to 617 homes.

For those interested in learning more about the seventh phase, the planning application’s reference number with Warrington Council is 2022/42709.
