Organisers unveil Liverpool Pavilion for World Expo 2010

These images show how the Liverpool Pavilion will look when it showcases the city at the World Expo 2010.

Organisers of Liverpool's presence at the six-month event in Shanghai have unveiled the Liverpool Pavilion as its aims to shine a spotlight on the city's assets and strengths.

Liverpool is the only UK city outside of London to have a dedicated presence at the World Expo. Its participation is being led by Liverpool Vision in partnership with Liverpool City Council, the Liverpool-Shanghai Partnership and the North West Development Agency.

Cllr Warren Bradley, leader of Liverpool City Council, said: "The designs and concepts behind the Pavilion are a true reflection of the city, drawing on its maritime, musical and sporting heritage, as well as its wider cultural offer.

"The Pavilion also reflects and illustrates the amazing regeneration which has taken place here in Liverpool, where we have married old and new whilst winning official World Heritage Site status at the same time."

A consortium led by Uniform, which included international exhibition and event specialists SYMA and architects BDP, was awarded the contract to design and build the Liverpool Pavilion.

At 25 metres long by 18.5 metres wide, roughly the size of a five-a-side football pitch, the Liverpool Pavilion has four distinct areas:

Liverpool Pavilion - World Expo 2010 2Entrance: Visitors will enter through a queuing system where they will experience the sound and imagery of a number of the city's defining characteristics, including sport and music. They will be given electronic swipe cards to register their personal details, data which will then available to sponsors and partners for marketing and business development purposes.

Liverpool Pavilion - World Expo 2010 3Auditorium: Visitors will enter an auditorium through the door of a cruise liner to enjoy their virtual cruise from Shanghai to Liverpool and the North West. This is a 10-minute 3D film which will highlight the region's culture, business know-how, achievements and natural and built environments. When the film is finished, visitors will exit the auditorium and pass into the exhibition and event area.

Exhibition and event area: This area of the Pavilion includes a number of elements including:

  • Three experience pods – Sport, Gateway to the North West and Music
  • An Information pod
  • Liverpool 360 – two walls displaying a range of multimedia material, information and imagery

Liverpool Pavilion - World Expo 2010 4Negotiations are taking place with both Liverpool and Everton Football Clubs to finalise their involvement in the exhibition and event aspects of the project.

Visitors to the music pod will be able to play the new Beatles: Rock Band video game, which will be available on Playstation 3, Xbox and Nintendo Wii.

The Gateway pod will take visitors on a virtual journey across the entire North West region, while Liverpool 360 will include short films called 10-Second Epics which depict elements of Liverpool culture.

VIP area: This area is over two floors and will be for the use of corporate sponsors and city representatives to entertain VIP guests and conduct business meetings.

The consortium being led by Uniform gets access to the Pavilion site, which is in the expo's urban best practice area, to begin work in November.

Around 70 million people are expected to visit the expo between 1 May and 31 October 2010.

The World Expo 2010 is predicted to deliver up to £50m in benefits to Liverpool and the North West over the next decade.

Steven Broomhead, chief executive of North West Development Agency, added: "The Shanghai Expo offers significant long-term opportunities for trade, investment and tourism for the whole of England's Northwest, and it is vital that we present the region's assets and opportunities in an imaginative way to capitalise on this once in a lifetime opportunity."

Last June, Peel Holdings confirmed it will sponsor the Liverpool Pavilion at the World Expo 2010.
