Zaha Hadid among Whitworth revamp longlist

The RIBA has announced the longlist for the competition to design a new extension and remodelling of the Whitworth Art Gallery on Oxford Road for the University of Manchester.

Superstar architect Zaha Hadid, who designed a chamber music recital room for the Manchester International Festival, is among the impressive list. The first stage of the competition attracted 139 expressions of interest.

The ten longlisted practices, in alphabetical order, are:

  • Amanda Levete Architects
  • Dixon Jones
  • Edward Cullinan Architects
  • Eric Parry Architects
  • Feilden Clegg Bradley
  • Haworth Tompkins
  • MUMA
  • Stanton Williams
  • Stephenson Bell with Carmody Groake
  • Zaha Hadid Architects

All ten practices will now attend an interview with the jury panel from which a shortlist of five practices will be selected to go through to the design phase of the competition. The shortlisted designs will be then be submitted in September 2009, followed by an exhibition of the schemes with final presentations and the selection of a winner in early November.
