Academy opening for Morrisons

Supermarket chain Morrisons has taken a 20,000 sq ft distribution centre in Academy Business Park in Knowsley from landlord Orbit Developments.

The unit is on a 15-year lease. The distribution centre is expected to be operational by November this year, with 54 vans servicing the Merseyside and North Wales area.

Morrisons said that the requirement for more distribution space was a direct result of the launch of Morrisons online services at the start of 2014, which has seen a surge in demand for fast moving consumer goods.

Ocado will operate as the delivery arm for the Morrisons brand.

Following the letting to Morrisons, land owner Orbit said that it was planning to develop 100,000 sq ft speculatively at the business park.

Tony Jones, managing director of Orbit Developments, said: "It is great to see that Morrisons have chosen to open their Merseyside distribution centre at Academy Business Park, which is part of Knowsley Industrial & Business Park.

"The scheme will eventually consist of 260,000 sq ft of new build industrial units."
