Sefton to sell Sands pub as Ainsdale regen kicks into gear
The local authority has agreed to dispose of the derelict pub on Shore Road to GSL Developments, which plans to transform the building into a hospitality venue.
Sefton Council has agreed heads of terms with GSL for the sale, which forms part of a wider regeneration strategy for Ainsdale-on-Sea, published last year.
The council said the Sands occupies a prominent location within the masterplan but “no longer provides a positive first impression for residents and visitors”.
Cllr Paulette Lappin, cabinet member for regeneration, economy and skills, said: “The former Sands site occupies one of the most prominent locations in Ainsdale and has long been recognised as a key opportunity for regeneration.
“This proposal will help address a long-standing vacant site while supporting our wider ambitions for sustainable growth, environmental enhancement and an improved visitor experience along the Sefton coast.”
Tamyln Stone, director of GSL Developments, said the firm would deliver a “first-class hospitality offer” at the site.
“We can now invest in the significant resources required to develop our designs, seek and secure planning approval, and to commence works at the earliest opportunity,” he said.
“We share Sefton Council’s ambitions for Ainsdale and its future and are delighted to play a part in achieving them.”
The wider vision for Ainsdale is set out in a nature-led masterplan. One of the key sites within the masterplan is the former Pontins holiday park, which the council wants to see redeveloped into a high-end resort and spa.
Other elements include the demolition of Toad Hall and the creation of a visitor centre in its stead, safer crossings at Shore Road and Coastal Road, as well as the renovation of the boardwalk around Sands Lake.
Sefton Council worked alongside Turley, Optimised Environments, and WSP to craft the proposals for Ainsdale-on-Sea.
