Miller progresses 224-home Northenden scheme

The housebuilder has purchased 18 acres from The Manchester College and aims to begin work on site early next year.

Cushman & Wakefield advised on Miller Homes on the deal with The Manchester College’s operator LTE.

“In a fantastic moment for Miller Homes, we are delighted to announce that we have now purchased the land for our intended Varsity Quarter development,” said David Brackley, Technical Director for Miller Homes. “This represents a multi-million-pound investment into the local economy and will no doubt encourage a boost to local shops and businesses in the area from future residents.”

The new development will be known as Varsity Quarter. Designed by Calderpeel and Sten Architecture, it will have 23 two-bedroom homes, 132 three-bedroom ones and 69 four-bedroom properties. There will also be 55 homes designated as affordable.

Planning permission was granted for the development in November. Pegasus was the planning consultant.

Miller Homes has also agreed to improve the sport facilities at Wythenshaw Park as part of its section 106 agreement, as well as improving the sustainable transport links in the area.

While work on part of the site will begin in early 2022, widespread development will not begin until the students at Northenden Campus are relocated in September. Once the students have moved, Miller Homes will demolish the school buildings and construct its housing development.

LTE has been selling part of the school’s diverse estate as part of a revamp. Other sites that have been sold include St John’s Centre in Spinningfields to HBD and a campus in Moston to One Manchester.
