Liverpool to back £45m funding for city centre roads overhaul
Plans for a major overhaul of roads in Liverpool city centre, including reducing Strand Street to four lanes, look set to move forward with a funding package to be discussed at a Liverpool City Region Combined Authority meeting on Friday.
The combined authority is looking to sign off the financing for the City Centre Connectivity Scheme, which includes £38.4m from the local growth fund, awarded in 2016, and £6.3m from the council.
The package is recommended for approval following a business case assessment by consultant Waterman’s in September this year.
Projects being considered for the programme include reducing Strand Street from six lanes to four to allow improved pedestrian links with the waterfront and a new cycleway.
Other plans include four new bridges to link Salthouse Quay with Mann Island; a new cycle path along Dale Street to link Lime Street station with the waterfront; and a new city bus hub near Queen Square bus station.
The majority of the spend will take place in 2019/20, with £26m earmarked, while £13.9m is set to be spent in 2018/19.
A public consultation on the scheme was carried out in October last year, with 838 responses.
