Revamp lined up for Moorfields station

An important gateway to Liverpool’s business district, the main entrance will see works including new cladding, lighting, signage, a covered staircase and relocated, secure cycle storage in a £1m project.

Funded by the Liverpool City Region Combined Authority, the works are subject to planning and design approvals, but construction “is expected” to begin in October and conclude by the end of 2025.

Merseyrail and Network Rail are supporting the scheme.

LCR CA said that the project represents the first phase of a broader vision to modernise Moorfields station, reflecting its importance to Liverpool’s commercial heart.

Steve Rotheram, Mayor of the Liverpool City Region, said: “Moorfields sits right at the heart of Liverpool’s business district – but for too long, its main entrance hasn’t reflected the energy and ambition of the area it serves.

“Whilst we finalise plans for stations to be devolved locally, this investment is about improving things in the short term – creating a cleaner, brighter, and more welcoming gateway for the thousands of people who travel into the district every day. It’s a meaningful first step towards a bigger transformation that will give this part of the city centre an upgraded facility.

“With the country’s most advanced new trains already in service and new stations like Maghull North and Headbolt Lane already delivered, we’re continuing to raise standards across our network – and Moorfields is next in line. Discussions are ongoing about a total revamp, but these upgrades are another step in the right direction.”

Moorfields Station has 2 entrance points, one in Old Hall St and the one in the photo. If the Mayor believes this is the beating heart of Liverpool’s Business District then heaven help us, as opposite this building is long-vacant land and derelict buildings, we also have Centric House, a modern office building current
ly being converted to flats. Yes this entrance to Moorfields need a massive makeover a lot more than proposed here but that that whole area needs rebuilding, and no more consultations please.

Lipstick on a pig springs to mind. The station entrance needs to be brought down to street level and grade A office space built on top to pay for it. This could easily be down at Moorfields has another entrance on Old Hall Street so passengers would be unaffected. As previously posted the whole street needs investment, with vacant plots and the old Yates`s being replaced with grade A office space, retail and residential with high quality public realm. Why does London get everything but a Liverpool station will get some plastic and metal hording. This is just not good enough.

Agree with both comments – its a sticky plaster. Also needs to address the side entrance to Lime Street – Hotham and Pudsey Street – so many visitors do not go out the front of Lime Street they come out the side – they head up London Road to Knowledge Quarter, Royal Hospital, Spine, Rutland Centre, School of Tropical Medicine. What must they think? Oh but there is consultation on £13m of Section 106 and cycle lanes – not sure the cycle lanes are worth it! Or will be used. Will cut off the businesses further which are already dying off and being replaced by kebab shop after kebab shop!

Classic superficial stuff from Steve. Him and his team at the CA clearly lack the vision and expertise to drive forward the big projects.

Ugly, waste of money. That they are doing this shows they have no plans at all to do it properly. Total waste of opportunity.

Given how badly this cladding ages, why would you spaff £1m replacing a dated a exterior with another ugly exterior that looks bad on day 1 and will look worse from there on out? Is that really the scale of our ambition and imagination?

A sticker plaster solution to a gaping wound.

You know this is being done on the cheap when the same couple are in both CGI photos.
