January start for £107m Warrington Bridge Street

Warrington Council has appointed Construction Partnership UK to build the first part of the £107m Bridge Street regeneration project, the new retail shell that will form the temporary market part of the scheme.

CPUK will begin construction of the 25,500 sq ft shell and its mezzanine floor in January 2016. The structure will be the first element of the Bridge Street Quarter regeneration scheme to be built and following its completion will become a temporary market hall on the site of what is currently Time Square. The retail shell is scheduled to take 35 weeks to complete.

The existing Warrington market will move into its temporary location in early 2017 during the demolition period of the old market building, whilst the new, permanent £10m market hall is being constructed. At no time will the market cease to trade. The new market building will open in 2019. The temporary market shell will then be converted into future retail use.

Terry O’Neill, leader of Warrington Council, said: “CPUK’s appointment is great news. The construction of the temporary market is such an integral part of the Bridge Street Regeneration project as it will provide our market traders with the setting they need to continue trading whilst Warrington Council will deliver the brand new, permanent market hall building.”

When completed in 2019, the £107m retail and leisure-led Bridge Street development  will comprise a 13-screen multiplex Cineworld cinema, a 42,000 sq ft market hall, several family restaurants, a 1,100 space multi-storey car park, Council offices, retail units and a public square.
