Construction set to begin on Stretford Lidl
Construction work will begin in the coming weeks on a Lidl store in Stretford, the retailer’s first in Trafford, which will replace the PC World unit off Chester Road.
Lidl secured planning permission from Trafford Council for the project in June this year, and contractor Morgan Hayward is set to start construction work later this month.
External works to the building include a full re-cladding and the entrance will be shifted to be south-facing. The entrance to the additional retail unit will be from the North East, and in total, there will be retail floor space of 14,700 sq ft and back-of-house functions covering a further 10,000 sq ft.
The proposals also include 119 car parking spaces to be accessed via Ravenswood Road, while pedestrian links to Chester Road will also be improved, and the existing security fencing will be removed.
Lidl said the development would create around 40 jobs as the supermarket joins both Aldi and Tesco along the stretch of Chester Road leading in and out of Manchester. PC World vacated the unit in 2016 to relocate to the nearby White City Retail Park.
Aldi relocated last year from its store in Seymour Grove to a 19,000 sq ft unit also at White City, while the existing Tesco Extra is opposite the proposed Lidl store.
Nick Harvey, head of property at Lidl UK, said: “We are grateful for the high level of support we have received throughout the planning stages of our scheme. After a successful planning application, we are pleased that we are finally delivering our first store in the Borough of Trafford.
“We have a hugely ambitious investment strategy for Greater Manchester and we envisage that opportunities such as the former PC World represent our flexible approach to increase our market share within the area.”
The project’s professional team includes Space Architects; Rapleys as planner; transport consultant SCP; and FDA Landscape as landscape architect.
Other stores Lidl is currently delivering nearby include a 24,000 sq ft store next to Tesco Extra in Baguley.
