Apartment plans progress at problem Morecambe site

Planning permission is set to be granted to the development of 50 apartments on the seafront in Morecambe, after almost a decade of developers earmarking the former hotel plot for homes.

Lancaster City Council is meeting on 14 November, with the scheme at the corner of Broadway and Marine Road East recommended for approval by planning offices.

The site was formerly occupied by the Art Deco-style Broadway Hotel, demolished in 2014 to make way for a block of retirement flats proposed by McCarthy & Stone.

However, work on the £11m project stalled and the plot was sold to local developer MH Stainton last year.

MH Stainton’s plans for the site would see the construction of 50 apartments, targeted at the “high-end” market, in a building ranging in height from between four and eight storeys.

A range of residential schemes on the site of the Broadway Hotel have been proposed in a series of applications by different developers since 2007.
