Replacement contractor sought for £40m Blackpool court after ISG collapse
The local council has warned of potential delays to plans to build a Magistrates’, family, and civil courts complex to Devonshire Road after the construction firm went bust.
Blackpool Council has updated on the progress of the £40m project via its tourism, economy and communities scrutiny committee, saying that it is “likely to be delayed”.
ISG was lined up to build the Devonshire Road scheme but appointed administrators in September, leaving several projects needing to find replacement contractors.
Work on the court complex had been scheduled to start in early 2025 and complete in late 2026. However, this timeline will now be revised.
In 2022, the Ministry of Justice pledged £40m to relocate the courts from the Blackpool Central site to Devonshire Road. The site has been largely vacant since 2007 when the hospital was demolished.
The relocation would unlock the Blackpool Central site, earmarked for a £300m leisure scheme that could attract around 600,000 additional visitors to the resort every year.
Blackpool Council is working with Nikal on the project and talks between the parties about what will be delivered and when are ongoing.
What a cheap and nasty looking building.

It’s genuinely horrendous, isn’t it?
And Blackpool have not been bad of late. But this courthouse proposal is more down to the Property Agency.
I think courthouse buildings should have some dignity and gravitas.

Why can’t they look at local firms which they know and can trust and employ local people
