Contractor wanted for next phase of £18m Partington Sports Village
Trafford Council is on the hunt for a partner to refurbish and extend the Partington Leisure Centre – a contract that is valued at between £13m and £15m.
Ellis Williams Architects designed the revamped leisure centre to include a four-court sports hall, indoor cycle studio, and four-lane 20-metre swimming pool. Various sustainability improvements have also been factored in, namely the introduction of air source heat pumps and installation of solar panels.
When works complete, Partington Leisure Centre will be known as Move Partington, joining the likes of Move Altrincham and Move Urmston.
The scheme is part of Trafford Council’s successful £18m Levelling Up Fund bid to improve the recreational facilities in Partington.
Known as Partington Sports Village, the project also involved the refurbishment of changing rooms at Cross Lane, the reopening of a local boxing club, and two 3g pitches. Another project – the BMX pump track – has secured planning permission and work has begun.
When it comes to the leisure centre, Kier Construction had led pre-construction efforts.
Now the scheme has gone out to the open market in a single tender process to find a contractor to both complete the leisure centre designs and build it. Expressions of interest are due by noon on 17 September. The contract would begin 1 November 2025 and conclude 30 April 2027.
“These are exciting times for Partington and these improvements will be a massive boost to everyone in the area,” said Cllr Eve Parker, Trafford’s executive member for leisure, arts, culture, and heritage.
“We are helping to give help residents access to sport and leisure, in line with our Council priorities.”

Want to see the Ellis Williams designs? Use application reference number 113101/FUL/24 when searching on Trafford Council’s planning portal. The planning project team for the leisure centre included Max Associates, ISG, Kier, Adept, Curtins, Tace, Land Studio, Jensen Hughes, JPP, Tree Solutions, and Hann Tucker Associates.

£13m to £15m to extend and refurbish a leisure centre in 2025/26? Trafford Council must either be behind the times or skint. Who is advising them on the costs? I bet they are getting a massive fee for it too.
