Vinci confirmed for £75m Trafford Centre extension

Intu has confirmed contractor Vinci will deliver a £75m overhaul of the Trafford Centre’s Barton Square, due to open in early 2020 with Primark signed up as anchor tenant.

Place North West first revealed Vinci was in line to deliver the project in March this year, and now Intu and the main contractor have confirmed it will start later this year.

Designed by architect Leach Rhodes Walker, the extension will add more than 110,000 sq ft of retail space to the Trafford Centre, featuring a glazed roof over Barton Square, which is home to brands including Next Home, Sea Life, the Legoland Discovery Centre, and Laura Ashley.

Primark will move into the former BHS Home unit, while Barton Square’s two-level Marks & Spencer closed at the start of the year. Cushman & Wakefield is the retail agent for Intu.

Colin Flinn, regional managing director at Intu, said: “Many of the things that make intu Trafford Centre so special will be extended into the Barton Square area of centre, allowing us to attract quality new brands and provide even more for people to shop, eat, play and do.

“We’re bringing a Primark store to intu Trafford Centre and will be announcing a number of other new retail and leisure operators soon.”
