Wythenshawe hospital plans Nightingale Centre extension
An application has been submitted to build a two-storey academy as an extension to the Nightingale Centre at Wythenshawe Hospital.
The plans, submitted by Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust earlier this month, will see the construction of a 7,300 sq ft National Breast Imaging Academy, which is located on the main site of Wythenshawe Hospital in south Manchester.
The ground floor of the proposed scheme would accommodate a breast imaging facility with six examination rooms, three mammography rooms and two ultrasound rooms, as well as a patients waiting room, radiology hub and radiography hub. The first floor of the extension will house teaching and office space.
The need for the extension comes as the result of a review of cancer services by the Greater Manchester Combined Authority and the expectation that some services will be relocated to the Nightingale Centre.
The trust predicts that 50% of the national breast radiographic workforce will retire within the next seven to 12 years, creating demand for facilities that can train future practitioners.
