Work starts on Capital&Centric’s Bolton net zero resi

Construction of the 97-home element of the Farnworth Green scheme is underway, the developer has confirmed, as the major town centre reboot heads towards completion.

The redevelopment of the old precinct reached its highest point earlier this year, and is on track to be completed by the end of December. There is now a focus on attracting retail operators to the town.

On the residential side, timber frames currently being constructed on site, with a view to the homes being super insulated, featuring triple glazed windows, solar PV panels, and having air source heat pumps to supply hot water.

If successful, the developer will use the low carbon blueprint for other brownfield sites across Greater Manchester and beyond.

Tom Wilmot, joint managing director at Capital&Centric, said: “When it comes to reaching net zero targets, emissions from homes are a big contributor.

“We’re proud to be testing our first net zero homes at Farnworth Green, delivering our first ‘Neighbourhood’ style homes as part of the wider re-boot of the town centre.

“In declaring a climate emergency, Bolton Council are looking to new ways to regenerate brownfield sites, meet housing demand but also transition to a more sustainable way of life.

“We’re aiming to set a new blueprint for regeneration of town centres in Farnworth, so it’s only right we test new net zero homes that can then be rolled out in other Greater Manchester communities.”

Once complete, Farnworth Green will comprise of 85 one- and two-bed apartments, 12 two- and three-bed family homes, more than 20,000 sq ft of space for bars, cafes and independent shops, a ground-floor community hub, and public square.

An events pavilion is also included in the scheme for outdoor community events, ranging from live music to makers markets, as well as an increase in greenery.

Cllr Richard Silvester, Bolton Council’s executive member for climate change and environment, said: “Tackling climate change is everyone’s responsibility, and the Bolton Climate Strategy sets out our plan to work with partners to make our borough cleaner and greener.

“We are delighted that Capital&Centric are leading the way on net-zero house building at Farnworth Green, transforming an underused site into a modern, vibrant and sustainable urban neighbourhood.

“This development, together with the ongoing work on the £20m long term plan, means it is an exciting time for both Farnworth residents and potential investors in other parts of the town.”

It would be good to see this level of investment and ambition in forgotten towns such as Leigh, a place which could have such fantastic potential if the existing spaces were given this level of care and commitment (here’s hoping it is on C&C radar)

I really do hope that this is a catalyst for the area, the location is good for it to ideally be a bus or tram away from Manchester and Bolton. Only every used to cycle through but a lot of vape shops etc.
