Whitworth loses out on Stirling Prize
The University of Manchester’s £15m art gallery off Oxford Road has missed out on the architectural accolade, with a girls’ school in south London named the 2015 RIBA Stirling Prize winner at a ceremony in London yesterday evening.
Burntwood School in Wandsworth by Allford Hall Moneghan Morris was described by the judges as “the most accomplished of the six shortlisted buildings”.
The other four contenders for the prize were:
- Darbishire Place in Whitechapel, by Niall McLaughlin Architects
- NEO Bankside in London, by Rogers Stirk Harbour + Partners
- Maggie’s Lanarkshire in Scotland, by Reiach & Hall Architects
- University of Greenwich’s Stockwell Street building by Heneghen Peng Architects
The extension and refurbishment of the 126-year-old Whitworth Art Gallery was completed in February. Since the Stirling Prize shortlist was announced in July the gallery had consistently been the bookies’ favourite to win.
The architect for the project was McInnes Usher McKnight Architects.
Haworth Tompkins’ £28m Everyman Theatre in Liverpool won the award in 2014.
The project team for the Whitworth included ISG, Manchester & Cheshire Construction, structural engineer Ramboll UK, services engineer Buro Happold, project manager Deloitte/Cragg Management Services, health and safety advisor AA Projects, cost consultant Appleyard & Trew, acoustic consultant Hann Tucker Associates, Sarah Price Landscaping, access consultant Lisa Foster Associates, and fire engineer Buro Happold.
Ahhh, if only the Whitworth was in London.
