Weaver Shipyard steers onward course
The developer of a project to build 83 homes and a marina on a brownfield site in Northwich is drawing up a detailed application to bring forward the scheme, after winning outline consent this week.
H2O Urban – a London-based partnership between developer Bloc and the Canal & River Trust – and Weaver Marine (Property), the landowner, plan to create a “leisure marina” on an eight-acre site 1.5km from Northwich town centre.
It is understood that H20 will work with Stevenage-registered Weaver Marine to deliver the marina, and a separate development partner would be appointed to deliver the residential units.
The site south of Saxons Lane is classed as brownfield but is still in active use by Weaver Marine as a boat maintenance and storage yard.
The proposed scheme would incorporate updated premises for the company, together with a mix of apartments, terraces, semi-detached and detached houses, 25 of which would be classed as affordable.
There would be other site improvements such as a new river pathway connecting to the area’s existing network of paths.
Cheshire West and Chester Council has approved outline plans for the site, and the developer will now work with its delivery partners to progress a reserved matters application confirming the design and layout of the scheme.
Construction is scheduled to start this year, subject to approval.
Avison Young is the planning consultant for the project and Urban Green, Curtins, Ramboll Environ and Atelier Heritage are also on the professional team.

“The scheme will open up this part of the waterfront to the public for the first time, whilst the marina will benefit waterway users and the local tourist economy more widely.”
